LONDON'S #1 DAMP SPECIALIST

How Does A London Damp Specialist Differentiate Damp Types?

Mould and moisture issues can eat away at the structure of your property if ignored for too long. However, it is never too late to resolve your concerns. Working with a London damp specialist is the smartest option to put your mind at ease.

Here at Environ Property Services, we treat damp problems as a serious issue. Major concerns may arise once the damage has spread throughout your home, making it more difficult and expensive to deal with.

Damp may also put you at a considerable disadvantage if you are planning to sell your house in the future. You can’t hide these kinds of issues from your assigned surveyor, and the sale price of your home may drop drastically because of this.

Environ Property Services can eradicate mould and moisture from your property, no matter the extent of the damage.

Before we proceed with the treatment, we will conduct an in-depth survey to find out the type of damp you have in your home.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DAMP

There are many different kinds of damp, occurring for various reasons, but they all have the same effect: mould and property damage.

If you are not sure what kind of damp you have in your property, our London damp specialists will be glad to help you distinguish it and tell you what has caused it.

First, there is what we call ‘penetrating damp’, which is also called water ingress. This is water that has entered your building from outside or due to leaks in the plumbing.

When a property’s floor, ceiling, or walls gets penetrated by water, it will be soaked with moisture, leading to severe growth of mould.

If the water comes from the ground, it will cause more damage, as it contains hygroscopic salts. This will attract more water and absorb it into the structure of your property.

When this happens, your house will attract wood-boring beetles and other insects, forcing you to replace your timbers entirely.

Penetrating damp will also result in mould growth and may even cause or worsen health issues like asthma. Not only will you need to spend on property repairs, but deal with medical issues too.

Then there’s lateral damp. This is due to groundwater entering your property through cracks in the building, which is why most basements are cold and damp.

Houses located in places with high water levels are more susceptible to this kind of problem.

Lateral damp is just as damaging, and if untreated, it can harm the structure of your property, weakening the foundation of the entire building.

It may also cause electrical shocks if the moisture hits internal wiring, which can be dangerous for you and your family.

To prevent this, your house’s basement should have reliable tanking systems as per existing building regulations. But if you feel like your cellar is too damp, don’t just assume that it is caused by lateral damp.

Lateral damp is often confused with rising damp, as they both show similar symptoms. While both should be fixed as soon as possible, there is a specific kind of treatment for each.

A London damp specialist will treat the former with tanking solutions, while the latter will be fixed with damp proofing techniques.

It is best to call recommended damp specialists to confirm the type of problem your property is facing so you can address it immediately.

Everything You Need To Know About Damp Proof Courses (DPC)

You may have heard of a ‘damp-proof course’ or DPC, but what is it exactly?

It’s a horizontal waterproof barrier found in the external walls of your property, 15cm above ground level. This helps prevent water from getting inside the building.

Although a DPC is effective in damp prevention, you must ensure that the ground outside remains 150mm or 6in below your DPC. You also need to monitor this for damage. If it does get damaged, you should hire London damp specialists to have it repaired or replaced immediately.

If your house doesn’t have a DPC, you should ask an independent damp specialist to have one installed.

However, before you ask someone to install your DPC, you should beware of companies that take advantage of customers, encouraging them to have their products installed even though it’s unnecessary.

Make sure you work with reliable London damp proofing specialists, to ensure that you are not duped into paying for an unnecessary service. You can count on us for unbiased opinions and treatments that genuinely work.

Benefits Of Having A Damp Survey

A damp survey will give you a detailed look into your property, specifically for its potential damp issues, and help contain them as soon as possible. This will provide you with a deeper understanding of the extent of any damp issues, stopping the problem from worsening.

Surveyors will look into the current or potential causes of damp, such as blocked or faulty guttering, plus the condition of your drainage and pipework.

Then, these will be appropriately assessed to know what kind of solutions are needed.

Reliable surveyors will also give you recommendations on how to avoid the same issues again. They will help you understand how too much moisture damages your property and answer any queries you have.

They will distinguish the type of damp your property has to know the appropriate method of treating it. For instance, if you have penetrating damp, your surveyor will suggest that you work with a London penetrating damp specialist.

For any kind of damp problems, get in touch with our team! We are knowledgeable and experienced in all aspects of damp and the necessary treatments to solve your problem. Give us a call or request your call back now!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

The cost of tanking solutions and other damp proofing techniques may vary due to your location and supplier. It can cost up to £70 per metre of a wall or £280 per wall. You may need to pay more if you plan to have all of your walls damp proofed.

You can, but the sale price of your house may be compromised. Serious damp issues like lateral, rising, or penetrating damp will have to be fixed by tanking experts and damp-proofing specialists.

Most house insurance policies do not cover damp and condensation. You are better off having your property examined by trusted surveyors to save on costly repairs. If damp is found, contact an experienced waterproof tanking expert or damp-proof specialist.

It may take around three to four days, depending on the size of the damp proof course (DPC) that needs to be installed. A smaller job may take up to 2 days, while a bigger one may take up to a week.

If the walls in your cellar are damp, it can encourage the growth of mould, and inhaling mould spores can cause nasal congestion, chest tightness, throat irritation, coughing, wheezing, and more. It is best to consult with cellar waterproofing professionals and damp-proofing companies to fix dampness in your cellar before it gets out of hand.

Because of the amount of moisture, dampness in a building can develop. Moisture occurs due to leaking pipes, ground floors, rising damp in basements, and so on. If you feel like your bedroom is getting damp, there may be an issue with the pipes that you’re not aware of. It would be best if you spoke to an expert from a waterproofing company.

It is vital to fix rising damp as soon as possible, as overlooking this will cause a lot of damage to your property’s structure. It can destroy your plaster and decoration, as well as cause timber rot.

Talk to the best rising damp specialists in the industry to solve this problem.

It might take months or years before signs of rising damp appear on your walls. However, please don’t wait for it to get worse; ask a damp specialist for a free quote and have them inspect your home as soon as possible.

I chose to use Environ to deal with a damp wall, the whole process from beginning to end has been straightforward, well explained and they've managed to strike a pleasing balance between friendliness and professionalism. Everyone they sent over during the course of the work, as well as their office staff has been, nice helpful and accommodating. I hope not to need to use them again but if I do, I'll do so gladly!

Came round to have a look at work required and actually realised it was all low level work. Explained and showed what was required. They can back about a week later (or thereabouts) to carry out the work which was done very quickly (about an hour if I recall). Because it took less time than was originally thought have not been charged for the materials so was very happy about that.
